Children's Museum Houston
A hands-on, kid-run city, an outdoor water lab and a toddler haven in the Museum District, plus a completely free Thursday night for the whole family.
Children's Museum Houston is the headliner of the Museum District for families, built entirely around play-based learning for kids from birth through age 12. It's a true rainy-day-and-sunny-day venue: most of it is indoors and air-conditioned, but it also has a genuine outdoor water exhibit, so it works year-round.

What's inside
The museum is organized into hands-on galleries aimed at different ages:
- Kidtropolis, USA, a kid-run city (ages 5+) where children role-play jobs, run a business and even vote.
- FlowWorks, an outdoor water-physics exhibit (ages 5+) with waves, vortices, rapids and hydropower to experiment with.
- Tot*Spot, a bilingual sensory space just for the under-35-months crowd, with bubble tubes, a padded Baby Haven and a Toddler Walk.
- PowerPlay, a climbing-and-movement challenge course (the Power Tower is for ages 5-15).
- Plus EcoStation, Invention Convention, How Does It Work?, Kidtropolis and a rotating Gallery of Wonder.
Free Family Night
Every Thursday from 5 to 8 pm, admission is completely free for everyone, the only catch is you have to bring a child. Free tickets are released online about 48 hours ahead and go fast, so reserve early. Outside those hours it's a paid museum (around $22 per person, with kids under 1 free); check the official site for current rates.
Practical tips
- Wear closed-toe shoes, no Crocs, flip-flops or bare feet, especially for the Power Tower.
- Plan on about 2.5 hours; reserve a timed entry online to skip the line.
- Strollers are allowed but capped at 31 in. wide x 52 in. long; wagons aren't permitted.
- Outside food isn't allowed inside galleries, but there's the Fresh Cafe and picnic tables.
