Architect Renzo Piano designed the main building (opened June 1987) around founder Dominique de Menil's belief that art should be seen in natural light. Working with engineers Ove Arup & Partners, he created a roof of light-filtering 'leaves' so the galleries are lit by daylight that shifts with the weather, time of day, and season. Visit the same room in morning versus late afternoon and the paintings genuinely look different, a quiet thing kids can be challenged to notice.

- Strollers are explicitly welcome inside the museum, and the campus is flat and easy to push around.
- Parking is free in the museum lots (W. Alabama St. and beside Richmond Hall) and on surrounding streets, a real perk in this part of town.
