McGovern Centennial Gardens

McGovern Centennial Gardens is a free, eight-acre formal garden inside Hermann Park, opened in 2014 to mark the park's 100th birthday. It's a favorite for strolls, photos, and letting kids burn energy among themed garden rooms, and it makes an easy free pairing with the nearby Japanese Garden.

The distinctive detail

At the heart of the gardens is The Mount: a roughly 30-foot-tall hill built by hand and layered like a wedding cake, with a gentle spiral path that's wheelchair- and stroller-accessible winding up to a summit. From the top you get a 360-degree view over the gardens to the downtown Houston skyline, and a cascading water feature spills into a reflecting pool at its base. Kids love the climb; most people reach the top in well under ten minutes.

Tips for families

Strollers handle the spiral path well. The garden is best in the cooler morning hours, much of it is open and sunny, so midday summer heat is intense and shade is limited. The Family Garden is a fun teaching stop for little ones interested in where food comes from.

Hours, cost & parking

Admission is free. The gardens keep daytime-only hours (with a posted last entry) and close on Thanksgiving and Christmas, confirm exact times on the official site, as they vary seasonally. Use the free Hermann Park lots and check the official parking map for the closest one.
