Sunday in Houston has its own rhythm. Mornings are quiet and church-bound, the light is soft, and by early afternoon the whole city seems to spill outside. It is my favorite day to do something easy with the kids: low pressure, often free, and home in time for an early bedtime before the school week. Below are the Sunday outings our family comes back to, plus honest notes on what is actually open and worth the drive.

Free or nearly free Sunday outings
Family Zone at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
On selected Sundays, the MFAH sets up a Family Zone in the galleries, usually around 1 to 4 p.m.: coloring sheets, picture books, hands-on prompts, and friendly staff who actually want your kids to ask questions about the art. It turns a big, hushed museum into a place little ones can handle. Kids 12 and under are always free, and the whole museum is free for everyone on Thursdays, courtesy of Shell, if a weekday works better. Because the Family Zone is not every single Sunday, check the MFAH calendar before you go.
Park in the Museum District garages and go early. By 2 p.m. on a pretty Sunday the galleries and the parking fill up fast.
Hermann Park
If the weather is good, this is the easiest Sunday win in the city. Hermann Park has the reflection pool, McGovern Lake with paddle boats, the little train, big open lawns, and the Houston skyline as a backdrop. It sits right next to the Museum District and the Houston Zoo, so you can stack a park morning with an indoor afternoon if the heat rolls in. Free shows at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Miller Outdoor Theatre, the open-air stage inside Hermann Park, puts on a full season of free performances: dance, music, family theater, and movie nights, with a grassy hill where kids can wiggle and you never pay for a seat. One important 2026 caveat: the theatre is in the middle of a major renovation, so the season is running late this year and shows are not happening as early as usual. Check the official schedule before you plan around it, and treat an evening show as a lovely Sunday wind-down when one is on.
The free covered "ticketed" seats at Miller are released online the day before a performance and go quickly. The hill behind them is always free and is honestly the better spot with kids, so bring a blanket and you are set.
Splash pads and neighborhood parks
For a no-plan Sunday, a free splash pad is hard to beat in our climate. Half the year, an outdoor Sunday afternoon is a sweaty negotiation. A few ideas that keep everyone happy indoors:

Some of the best Sunday memories are worth a ticket. A few we rotate through:
- Armand Bayou Nature Center on the southeast side opens Sundays from about noon to 5 p.m. (last entry around 4). It is a genuine slice of Gulf Coast wilderness with boardwalks, a farm site, and real wildlife. There is an admission charge now (kids 3 and under are free; older kids and adults pay a modest rate), so check current prices on their site before you go.
- Emancipation Park in the Third Ward has a pool, splash pad, playground, and deep Houston history all on one site, a great Sunday with older kids who can take in the story.
- Bear Creek Pioneers Park out west is huge, shady, and family-friendly. Pack a real picnic and plan to stay a while.
Make Sunday a "one place, plenty of time" day rather than a packed itinerary. Pick a single anchor, get there before the after-church rush around 11, bring water and snacks, and let the day be slow.
